On Saturday, 14 October 2017, an exciting new chapter began in St Helena’s history when the first ever commercial flight from South Africa touched down at St Helena Airport at 1.59pm. Using their Embraer E190-100IGW aircraft, Airlink brought in this inaugural flight from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, following a six hour journey incorporating a fuelling stop in Windhoek, Namibia. Airlink will now operate a weekly service between St Helena and Johannesburg and St Helena and Cape Town (via the stopover at Windhoek International Airport). 72 passengers comprising returning Saints and invited guests – Tour Operators from Eastcape Tours, Get Africa Travel, Springbok Atlas and Island Holidays, International media – BBC, ITV, The Times, Thomson Reuters, Associated Press and other publications – were greeted by HE Governor Lisa Phillips on arrival and then by a full St Helenian welcome in the packed Arrivals Hall.

Television only reached the remote South Atlantic island of St Helena in the 1990s. In August 2009, students at the island's Prince Andrew School asked, "Why can't we have our own local TV news?" They then made this pioneering TV-style news item as part of the BBC News School Report project. The piece was shot by Rosie, a visiting student from Stratford upon Avon Grammar School for Girls in the UK.

The blue lantern hotel restaurant threw open its doors to the public for bookings on Saturday the 2nd of May after a grand opening event hosted by owners Reg and Keith yon on the evening before. And the St Helena golf club held a fund raising Texas scramble last weekend. Saint Helena is a tropical island of volcanic origin in the South Atlantic Ocean, 4000 km east of Rio de Janeiro. It is part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, which also includes Ascension Island and the islands of Tristan da Cunha. Saint Helena measures about 16 by 8 kilometres (10 by 5 mi) and has a population of 4,255 (2008 census). It was named after Saint Helena of Constantinople. The island was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502. One of the most remote islands in the world, it was for centuries an important stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa. Napoleon was imprisoned there in exile by the British, as were Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo (for leading a Zulu army against British rule) and more than 5,000 Boers taken prisoner during the Second Boer War. Between 1791 and 1833, Saint Helena became the site of a series of experiments in conservation, reforestation, and attempts to boost rainfall artificially. This environmental intervention was closely linked to the conceptualization of the processes of environmental change and helped establish the roots of environmentalism. Saint Helena is Britain's second oldest remaining British Overseas Territory, after Bermuda.
