  • St Helena Documentary

The story of St Helena is a compelling one, both from an investment and tourism perspective. Investment opportunities and private sector growth on the South Atlantic island of St Helena are expected to boom following confirmation that the airport is due in December 2015 - currently, it takes 5 days to reach St Helena by boat from South Africa. It is perhaps a sense of soon being able to grasp an almost unreachable dream that is proving so appealing to investors, hence the media theme of "Getting there".

The piece was shot by Rosie, a visiting student from Stratford upon Avon Grammar School for Girls in the UK.

Television only reached the remote South Atlantic island of St Helena in the 1990s. In August 2009, students at the island's Prince Andrew School asked, "Why can't we have our own local TV news?" They then made this pioneering TV-style news item as part of the BBC News School Report project. The piece was shot by Rosie, a visiting student from Stratford upon Avon Grammar School for Girls in the UK.

A bit shaky, but I hope gives a reasonable representation of how much 'fun' it is to drive in parts of this wonderful 47sq mile Island in the middle of the South Atlantic.

St Helena Island News - Week 5 This week on Saint Helena Local TV broadcast: Could the Island be running out of water? We talk to Connect St Helena to find out. St Helena like many other countries in the word celebrate nurses day. European victory celebrated for the 70th anniversary of VE Day. Local talent cover your favorite Beatles and ABBA songs And Island shooters practice for upcoming Island games. Saint Helena is a tropical island of volcanic origin in the South Atlantic Ocean, 4000 km east of Rio de Janeiro. It is part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, which also includes Ascension Island and the islands of Tristan da Cunha. Saint Helena measures about 16 by 8 kilometers (10 by 5 mi) and has a population of 4,255 (2008 census). It was named after Saint Helena of Constantinople. The island was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502. One of the most remote islands in the world, it was for centuries an important stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa. Napoleon was imprisoned there in exile by the British, as were Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo (for leading a Zulu army against British rule) and more than 5,000 Boers taken prisoner during the Second Boer War. Between 1791 and 1833, Saint Helena became the site of a series of experiments in conservation, reforestation, and attempts to boost rainfall artificially. This environmental intervention was closely linked to the conceptualization of the processes of environmental change and helped establish the roots of environmentalism. Saint Helena is Britain's second oldest remaining British Overseas Territory, after Bermuda.
